What is the Diamond Carat?

The Carat is the unit of measurement for calculating the weight of Diamonds.

It is not the metric measure that counts but the weight measure, so do not confuse the Carats with the Millimeters. The more the carat weight of a diamond, the larger it can be in millimeters.

Diamonds can also be measured in "Points", 100 Points correspond to 1 Carat.

3 Things To Know About Carat

  • Don't skimp on cutting a Diamond. This factor is the most important to enhance the beauty of a diamond. Even a larger Diamond, with the same Clarity and Color, can appear lifeless if the Cut is Poor.

  • Round cut diamonds have a cost per carat higher than all other cuts defined as Fancies such as emerald, oval, heart, and so on. The Excellent, Very Good, and Good cut in a Round Diamond Cut are worth more because the cutter is required to maximize his talent in the symmetry of the 57/58 facets and the stone in general.

  • When purchasing a diamond ring, you must give importance to the relationship between the size of the stone and the width of the setting on which it will be mounted. The smaller the frame, the larger the diamond will appear. For example, a 1.5 Carat Diamond on a fine ring will be larger than a 10mm wide band ring.

Additional carat informations before buying a Diamond

In some cases, the setting can make a diamond appear more prominent. For example, a ring with a central diamond surrounded by small diamonds can make the main gemstone appear larger. This effect is given by the set of diamonds which changes the visual perspective.

A diamond mounted on a ring built with a bezel surrounding the gem favors its focus, making it appear larger.

The total carat weight is the sum of all the diamonds mounted on a piece of jewelry. So, be sure to inquire about individual diamond weights when shopping for jewelry.

Carat is the primary factor affecting the price of Diamond

The Carat weight of a Diamond is undoubtedly also a factor that defines the status of the wearer. The fact that a diamond is heavier does not always indicate that it is a better stone. The most important factors are the Cut, the Clarity, and the Color.

These factors define the absolute beauty of the Diamond.

Diamond Carat on Price

The value of a gem such as the Diamond is directly related to its mass. Diamond's price is also influenced by its quality intended as Cut, Clarity, and Color.

The History about Diamond Carat

The name "Carat" came to life in ancient India when the precious stones were weighed with Carob seeds which by nature have a regular size and weight.

In 1907, a unit of mass corresponding to 0.2 grams was adopted as the value of the Carat. Small Diamonds can also be measured in "Points", since 100 Points correspond to 1 Carat.

Diamond Carat

The Carat corresponds to the weight of the diamond and therefore also to its size.

The carat corresponds to 200 milligrams. In fact, diamonds are weighed and certified to the hundredth of a carat with special sensitive electronic scales.

Then there is the Emerald cut of rectangular shape with rounded corners, as well as the square or heart-shaped, or baguette or oval.

The name carat is said to refer to the seed of the carob tree which by nature is always produced in identical specimens and which in the Indies was precisely used for weighing precious stones.

For obvious understandable reasons the diamond of greater weight and therefore of greater size has in itself an increase significantly higher degree of rarity which then determines its value.
